PEDAGOGY FOR DISSENT THROUGH EXPERIMENTAL DOCUMENTARY

Pioneer Works, Spring 2017

A how-to and critique of techniques and tactics for political activism, direct action, and dissent taught through radical and experimental documentary.  This roundtable series presents screenings and discussions with media makers, theorists, thinkers and activists.

Pedagogy for Dissent surveys documentary media created at the intersection of art and activism, exploring the power of the image, culture jamming experiments, tactics and strategies of media making and distribution.  We take a critical and grateful look at activism of the past in order to design effective contemporary modes of dissent.

Pedagogy for Dissent is curated and hosted by Liz Flyntz and Anna Scime

Session 1, February 22, 2017 – ENGAGING THE POLITICAL PROCESS (FOR BETTER &/OR WORSE)

In this session, we sampled films and videos that document and investigate the successes and failures of political activities - from elections to protests and picketing.

Session 2, Wednesday, March 22, 2017 – MANIFESTOS & INDEPENDENT JOURNALISM

In this session, we sampled media manifestos that use stark language, technique and imagery to spread a clear message. We also viewed examples of radical journalism taking a stance against mainstream media news via community participation, infiltration and alternative methods of distribution.

Session 3, Wednesday, April 26, 2017  – TACTICAL & STRATEGIC MEDIA

This session was a how-to primer on using media as part of a larger activist strategy.  Presenting innovations, interventions, tactics, and techniques to get attention for your cause (or avoid unwanted scrutinizing of your activities).

Roundtable guests included: Skip Blumberg, Anne Bohlen, Nancy Cain, Davidson Gigliotti, Zack Khalil & Igor Vamos.
